At Evans, we are dedicated to providing premium curtain fabrics and accessories to help designers and makers create stunning window treatments. One essential component for achieving a polished, structured look in curtains is buckram fabric. Known for its stiffness and durability, buckram plays a key role in various textile applications, particularly in curtain design. In this guide, we’ll explore what buckram fabric is, how it’s made and how to use it effectively in your curtain projects.

What Is Buckram Fabric?

Buckram is a stiff, woven fabric traditionally made from cotton, linen, or a blend of both. It is often coated with a strengthening agent like glue to enhance its rigidity. This durable fabric is widely used across different industries, from bookbinding to fashion. However, its primary use in interior design is to reinforce curtain headers, eyelets and pelmets, ensuring they maintain their shape and structure over time.

How Is Buckram Made?

Buckram fabric is created using natural fibers such as cotton or linen. The material undergoes several stages of processing:

1.    Cleaning and Preparation: The fibers are cleaned and spun into yarns.

2.    Weaving: The yarns are woven into a tight, durable fabric.

3.    Coating: The fabric is treated with glue or starch to stiffen it, making it ideal for structural applications.

The degree of stiffness can vary depending on the amount of coating applied, allowing designers to choose the right level of support for their specific needs.

Buckram fabric is an essential component in curtain making, offering support and structure in several key areas:

1. Curtain Eyelets

Eyelet curtains require a strong backing to ensure the rings hold securely and glide smoothly across the rail. Buckram reinforces the fabric at the top of the curtain, preventing sagging and ensuring a neat, professional finish.

2. Curtain Pleats

Whether you’re crafting pinch pleat or goblet pleat curtains, buckram provides the necessary support to maintain the shape of the folds. Since pleats require a firm backing to stay in place, using buckram helps achieve a crisp, structured appearance.

3. Pelmets

Pelmets are decorative fabric-covered boards placed at the top of windows to hide curtain tracks and enhance insulation. Buckram is often used as a base material for pelmets, offering the rigidity needed to maintain their shape while complementing the overall window treatment design.

How to Use Buckram Fabric

Buckram is available in two main types: fusible and sew-in. The choice between them depends on the level of convenience and durability you require.

Fusible Buckram

Fusible buckram features an adhesive backing that allows it to be ironed directly onto curtain fabric. Here’s how to apply it:

1.    Measure and Cut – Determine the required length and cut the buckram accordingly.

2.    Position – Place the adhesive side of the buckram against the back of your curtain fabric.

3.    Press and Bond – Use a damp pressing cloth and gently iron over it to activate the adhesive. Avoid steam, as moisture can weaken the glue.

4.    Check Adhesion – Lift a small section to ensure it has bonded properly. If not, apply more heat and pressure.

Sew-In Buckram

Sew-in buckram is stitched directly into the fabric, offering a more traditional and durable solution. To apply:

1.    Measure and Pin – Cut the required length and pin it in place along the top of the curtain fabric.

2.    Fold and Sew – Fold the fabric over the buckram and stitch it securely to create a strong, reinforced edge.

3.    Finish the Curtain Header – Once sewn in, the buckram will provide the necessary structure to maintain pleats or eyelet spacing.

Choosing the Right Size of Buckram

Selecting the right size depends on the curtain type and design. Buckram comes in various widths and weights to suit different projects.

Roll Lengths: Typically available in 50m or 100m rolls for large-scale curtain-making projects.

Widths: Available in 10cm, 12.5cm, 15cm, and 20cm, depending on the desired header depth.

Weight Options: Ranges from lightweight to heavyweight, ensuring flexibility for different fabric thicknesses.
